Lineberry Alliance Project Idea #4 – Our Park

July 10th, 2008 by Jason Hibbets

The fourth project idea is for the youth in our neighborhood:

#4 Lineberry / Sierra Drive park – probably later in the year or early next Spring (2009), but we have an opportunity to participate in the park master planning process. I know that many folks are interested in this. We are still waiting for the city to purchase the land, but we’ve got support on City Council to help us with this effort.

The concept here is to harness the creativity of the youth in our neighborhood to create a park in their vision. Perhaps hosting both a youth and adult charrette to determine which amenities we are interested in and begin to establish neighborhood interests and ownership in the park. I also think it’s important to learn about CPTED (Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design) during this process. Additionally, I think we need to start identifying ways to make our community more pedestrian and cyclist friendly now, so that this is a well-established part of our community.  This is important because the intention & concept of the park is to be a walkable, destination park for the neighborhood.

As you visit other parks throughout the City of Raleigh and other places, start taking notes on the things that you like, don’t like, or things that are missing. Something unique could become an asset for our community (for example, the frisbee golf course at Kaplan Park). The end result would be a walkable, destination park for the Lineberry area.

Please discuss this idea in our forum at http://lineberry.org/boards/viewtopic.php?p=110
