Lineberry Alliance Project Idea #5 – What’s Our Name?

July 11th, 2008 by Jason Hibbets

The fifth project idea is for the economic development of our neighborhood:

#5 Name Our Area – every great city has smaller pieces that make it up. Raleigh has some great historic neighborhoods like Boylan Heights, Oakwood, and Glenwood-Brooklyn. We are seeing the resurgence of downtown before our eyes and the talks of a mid-town. We’ll, our area of town is not going to be left out of this naming momentum and it’s time for us to creatively and smartly name or area of town before someone else does. For the purposes of this project, the area shall be defined as follows:

  • South of I-40
  • East of Gorman Street / Trailwood Drive
  • North of Tryon Road
  • West of the Carolina Pines / RGA railroad tracks

We’ve discussed this before a few months ago in our community forum, in a thread titled What should we name our part of town? The next steps and the decision on naming were unclear and at that time, it was more of a creative exercise more than anything. At the time, the leading candidates were Centennial South and Trailwood Pines.

This is a complicated issue, but it could have have a drastic change in the positive economic development of this area. We need all the neighborhoods, even the ones outside of the Lineberry area to participate. We need our business community to participate. Ever wonder why we don’t have that nice little restaurant around the corner or that coffee shop that we can swing by on your daily routine? It’s because the demographics of our area don’t reflect and represent who we really are – and that’s what businesses look at when they are making a decision on location.

So what’s next? I think there are two steps that can be taken, 1) organize a meeting / charrette of the businesses and other neighborhoods in the area to discuss this topic, set a date, get the word out. Perhaps in the August – September time frame. 2) make a decision on the name and start promoting it.

Please discuss this idea in our forum at http://lineberry.org/boards/viewtopic.php?p=111
