Remember that we had Mitch Silver, Director of City Planning visit our District D Neighborhood Alliance meeting in September?  Well, they’ve won an honorable mention for the recent publication of the zoning handbook (PDF).  Congrats!

RALEIGH PLANNING DEPARTMENT A WINNER AT STATE PLANNING CONFERENCE

The City of Raleigh Planning Department received an “Honorable Mention Award” for the Raleigh Zoning Handbook at the 51st annual North Carolina Chapter of the American Planning Association (NCAPA) conference in September. The NCAPA recognized the Raleigh Zoning Handbook in the “Implementation, Large Community” category.

The Planning Department produced the user-friendly Raleigh Zoning Handbook to help elected officials, citizens, staff, and developers understand zoning in Raleigh. Aimed at improving customer service, the book is available for free on the City’s website at www.raleighnc.gov.

“The book is a wonderful tool for all of Raleigh’s residents,” said Mitchell Silver, City of Raleigh Planning Director. “Zoning is a basic part of managing a city’s growth and understanding how it works is important to being an informed citizen.  This book is designed to help regular folks understand a process that can be confusing and frustrating by bringing together the rules, guidelines and code provisions of the City into one document.”

The NCAPA commended the handbook’s simple, but highly effective text, which translates complex ordinance language in to a readable and accessible format. The Committee felt the Raleigh Zoning Handbook will serve as model for all communities in North Carolina regardless of size and regulation complexity.
