Shopping Ideas Needed for SWCAC

November 6th, 2009 by Jason Hibbets

I was reading the November 2009 edition of the SouthWest Citizens Advisory Council  newsletter [PDF] and thought I’d share an agenda item that I think is very important.  It’s a chance for you to provide input into what types of shopping and services you would like at future commercial space on Tryon Road, near Renaissance Park. From the agenda:

Commercial activity at the corner of South Wilmington Street and Tryon Road – the plan for Renaissance Park includes three blocks of retail with this corner  corner block being developed first. At this time Amelia Park LLC the parent of Renaissance Park, is planning to fill that first block with Golden Corral  and Strayer University. Representatives from Amelia Park LLC and Golden Corral will join us to discuss their plan and to hear our ideas. This will be the time to express your opinions about what type of businesses you will be willing to support in that area.

For the residents at in the Linberry area, the closest shopping we have is the Raleigh Oaks shopping center.  We have a few decent businesses there, but all of our shopping needs are not met.  The new commercial opportunities would be about a 5 minute drive for us and walkable to our neighbors in Renaissance Park.  If you have ideas, I encourage you to either share them in the comments or show up to the meeting on Monday, November 9, 2009 at 7:00 PM, Carolina Pines Park.

What types of business do you frequent, that you would like a little closer to home?  Coffee shop? Bank? Restaurants? Urgent care?  Let us know so that we can share these with Amelia Park LLC.  This is about being collaborative in doing local economic development instead of being force feed commercial opportunities that we may not want or need.

boutique grocery store would be nice. Food Lion carries cheap every day foods, but we lack something that could offer higher end wines, cheeses, gluten free food options, etc.

SECU is nearby on Centennial, so banking is covered. Small, classy restaurants would be best -Golden Corral isn’t what I’m looking for, but I’m glad something’s going in. We have a coffee shop by the movie theater already. It’s privately owned, and I’d hate for something corporate like starbucks to steal business from them.

Also, would you mind sending me the contact info for the Strayer folks off list? I’m the online teacher of the year for the state, and I’d like to see if maybe there’s a role for me at this new office!

    Hardware store would be great!!!

maybe you could include a map in this post to show folks where it will go in?

I think a florist would be nice. I don’t think there is one that is close by this area.

Not only does South Raleigh desperately need a grocery store and a pharmacy, but also that area could use a gym/health club. Anyone else notice there’s not a single one between downtown and White Oak area? Nada. There was once a nice one in Chapanoke Square about ten years ago…wish it’d come back.
Some nice non-chain restaurants would be good too.
