Raleigh, NC – The Pleasant Ridge & Ramsgate Community Watch, building a safe and informed family community, held their fall quarterly meeting on November 10, 2009. Hot topics from the meeting included speeding concerns on Sierra Drive and Lawrence Drive, parking / visibility issues at Sierra Drive and Voyager Circle, and a recap on the Raleigh Police Department (RPD) ride along with Tabitha Groelle and Jason Hibbets. The annual cookies exchange was also held. Members in attendance brought cookies to share. A food drive was suggested for next year’s Fall meeting.
The meeting notes are available on the community watch website [PDF]. Summaries of the RPD ride alongs have been popular posts: RPD Ride Along – 5 Crime Fighting Tips and Ride Along Part II, The Tabitha Chronicles.
Speeding in our neighborhood has been a recurring topic at our meetings. Members showed up with an action plan and will report back at the annual meeting on February 9, 2010. Tom Fuller reported on the procedure to reduce the speed limit on Lawrence Drive. The goal is to lower the speed limit from 35 MPH to 25 MPH. To do this, Tom and other neighbors need 75% of the signatures from Lawrence Drive residents (not home owners) and will be gathering those signatures over the next few weeks. Similar efforts are being lead by Nancy Johnson, who volunteered to work on the speeding issues on Sierra Drive.
There were also concerns about parking on the top of hill on Sierra Drive at the intersection of Voyager. Jay Joiner volunteered to look into the parking issue. There was some concern about people being able to park directly in front of their home, but at the same time, people were concerns with visibility issues, future accidents, and speeding at the top of the hill. There is currently a suggested speed limit of 30 MPH posted on both sides of hill.
The next event is the third annual Holiday Lights event on December 13, 2009 at the Poole Residence on Balboa Road. Come on out and meet some neighbors and get into the holiday spirit. The light display is amazing and it’s a great chance to meet the folks who set it up.

About: Jason: I'm a neighborhood advocate. I started off by getting involved in the Pleasant Ridge & Ramsgate Community Watch program and helped grow that organization. I saw an opportunity to unite other neighborhoods in our area with the Lineberry Alliance. I became chair of Raleigh's South West Citizen Advisory Council (SWCAC) in April 2010 along with vice chair Anthony McLeod and second vice chair Mary Belle Pate. I work with other neighborhood leaders in District D alongside City Councilor Thomas Crowder, on the District D Neighborhood Alliance (DDNA). I've completed Raleigh Neighborhood College (Spring 2005) and Leadership North Carolina (May 2007). In 2009, I lead a group of neighborhood volunteers to review Raleigh's 2030 Comprehensive Plan. I have a genuine interest in strong communities, fostering diversity, understanding the issues, and being transparent in my work. You can follow me on Twitter: @jhibbets |
