Getting money for Tryon Road and our neighborhood park

June 4th, 2010 by Jason Hibbets

At Tuesday night’s budget hearing (6/1/2010), it was standing-room only as many different groups were on hand to get in their budget requests to City Council. Support for the arts was strong and kicked things off. Then the jockeying began at the podium.

I would first like to thank all the folks who attended to show their support. We had a good number of people from South West Citizens Advisory Council (SWCAC) attend and stand during the request to show city council that we really need some attention in South West Raleigh. We can only make things happen in our neighborhoods if we take the initiative to make them happen.

I was very pleased to present the budget requests for the SWCAC and excited that we had so much support from our neighborhoods. SWCAC had a total of eight items that we asked for, two of which stood out and got some heads nodding on city council:

  1. Support and funding for Tryon Road realignment project

I asked city council for their help and support with the Tryon Road expansion, also known as Tryon Road part C. I mentioned  that Raleigh needs to step up and be a catalyst among the current stakeholders: City of Raleigh, NCDOT, and Wakefield development. The City of Raleigh can help move this project forward and start a domino effect for the project, getting the other stakeholders motivated to get their parts started; the bridge replacement (NCDOT) and the realignment connections (Wakefield Development).

      • Funding for park planning at the proposed neighborhood park at Lineberry Drive and Sierra Drive

I first thanked city council for purchasing the land at 2640 Sierra Drive. I requested that we get funding for park planning, which is the next step we need in order to get the an actual park on the ground.

We’ll see how the budget deliberations go over the next month and we’ll follow-up on all of our items.

A small tidbit that I noticed at the budget hearing, SWCAC was the only CAC that requested budget items as a CAC. Other chairs were present, but I do not believe they made requests on behalf of their CAC. I’m glad to represent SWCAC and get us in front of city council to show how active we are and share the enthusiasm for our community.
