Tryon Road and Lake Wheeler Road Funding

August 23rd, 2010 by Jason Hibbets

I’m sure many people are interested in both the Lake Wheeler Road improvements and the Tryon Road, Part C project. The City of Raleigh recently announced the major road projects that are to be included in their 10-year Capital Improvement Plan (CIP). Both projects made the cut for phase one, which means that funds are being allocated for the projects.

What does that all mean? I’m not sure yet. But I’ve got some research to do, as I’m concerned about the coordination with Tryon Road Part C and the Tryon Road bridge. For now, check out the details for these two projects in our vicinity.

CITY’S ADOPTED CAPITAL IMPROVEMENT PROGRAM ALLOCATES FUNDS FOR MAJOR STREET CONSTRUCTION

In its adopted Capital Improvement Plan (CIP), the City of Raleigh continues its commitment to improving the Capital City’s major streets.

On June 28, the City Council adopted the 10-year CIP and the City budget for Fiscal Year 2010-11 (FY11). FY11 began on July 1 and ends on June 30, 2011. The CIP covers FY11 through FY 2019-20. The CIP is divided into two phases. Phase 1 represents the coming five years and includes $115,039,000 in major street projects. The CIP only lists City funds that are being allocated to projects; it does not include outside funding sources. Several of the City’s CIP projects also receive state and federal funds.

Major street projects that are funded in Phase 1 of the City of Raleigh’s CIP and the City allocation they will receive are:

  • Lake Wheeler Road improvements, $2,149,000. This project is scheduled to begin in FY12 and be completed in FY14. A multi-purpose path will be constructed along the west side of Lake Wheeler Road. Also, turn lanes will be installed at various intersections along Lake Wheeler Road between Tryon Road and I-40;
  • Tryon Road, Part C, $4,253,000. This project is scheduled to begin in FY14 and be completed in FY15. Tryon Road will be widened to a four-lane median-divided section from Lake Wheeler Road to the Norfolk Southern railroad bridge. There also will be curb and gutter, sidewalks, streetlights and bicycle lanes on both sides;
