’tis the season….Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Christmas, New Years, birthdays, traveling, visitors, break-ins…
Yep, I said it. The B word. BREAK-INS.
Unfortunately this is the time of year that as many of us prepare for Christmas, traveling, celebrating with family and friends, someone else is preparing to make our holiday one we won’t forget.
There are times you can do everything right and someone will still break into your house. However, there are many things that you can do that will make a potential burglar think twice and possibly even deter them. Here are a few tips as we get ready to say goodbye to 2010 and hello to 2011: (more…)

Have you seen the new bus stop on Lineberry Drive? We got some upgrades at the bus stop near Lineberry Drive and Trailwood Drive on CAT route 11 (Avent Ferry route).

I was curious about what was going on and what sparked the enhancement from a single bench to a full on shelter and waiting pad. I was able to get up with Aaron Hair, Planner I with the City of Raleigh to get the details. We put Aaron on the hot seat for a quick interview on these upgrades and other Capital Area Transit (CAT) services:

$2.1 million being pumped into the Lake Wheeler Road corridor? Am I reading this right?
This news is back from October 19, but relevant to our area. Neighbors have been asking for pedestrian improvements to the Lake Wheeler Road corridor for years, but we keep hitting road blocks. Some believe that the lack of a master plan for the road is one problem. Long-term plans have included a 5-lane option, a 4-lane with a median option, and even a 3-lane option for road expansion.
The requests and dialog that I’ve seen go to City Council haven’t focused on expanding the road so that our neighbors to the South can get to downtown and I-40 faster–we’ve been asking for sidewalks and crosswalks. Have you tried to walk to Carolina Pines Park from our neighborhoods? Good luck crossing Lake Wheeler Road.

Back in July, I wrote a post about Sharing with your neighbors that focused on the site NeighborGoods.net. The service connects people who need to borrow and rent “neighborly” items with others in the community that have the items. Rakes, shovels, lawn mowers, bikes, vacuum cleaners, etc.
In October, I interviewed the founder and CEO of NeighborGoods.net, Micki Krimmel, for opensource.com. Since then, I’ve been thinking about firing up the service for my neighborhood here in Raleigh.

Raleigh, NC – The Pleasant Ridge & Ramsgate Community Watch, building a safe and informed family community, is hosting a pot luck dinner and their final meeting of the year on November 16, 2010. All Pleasant Ridge & Ramsgate Community Watch members are invited to attend. The pot luck will start at 6:30 pm at Lake Wheeler Pentecostal Church (back room) and the meeting starts at 7pm.
We’d like to highlight the community watch in action. Watchful neighbors helped stop an in progress robbery on October 26, 2010. An email was sent to our neighborhood wide Alliance list titled: Burglars Bagged and it promptly boasted, community watch works! It summarized that Raleigh Police Department (RPD) arrested at least two suspects coming out of the house at 2408 Sierra between 4:30 and 5:00 pm on that afternoon.

“The bridge is the linchpin to this whole discussion and the ball’s really in DOTs court right now,” said Eric J. Lamb, PE, Transportation Services Division Manager for the City of Raleigh Public Works Department in an interview with Charlotte Huffman, NBC17. I mentioned this in my previous post on the Tryon Road expansion project:

Landlords, real estate agents, and property managers in the Lineberry area should take advantage of this training to educate themselves on how the PROP can impact their ability to rent their property and how to help draft an effective lease to attract good renters and enforce the quality of life issues that often deteriorate our neighborhoods.
CITY OF RALEIGH TO OFFER LANDLORD TRAINING PROGRAM ON OCT. 20
Registration is open to enroll in the City of Raleigh’s Landlord Training Program, a one-day course for rental property owners and managers, real estate agents, lawyers and others who deal with rental issues. The last training program for 2010 is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 20 from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Raleigh Housing Authority’s multi-purpose community room, located at 971 Harp St.

I had the privilege to present along side Eugene Weeks and Mark Turner, two outstanding community leaders, at today’s Raleigh Neighborhood Exchange. The neighborhood exchange was held on Saturday, September 18, 2010 at the McKimmon Conference Center and is a chance for citizens across Raleigh to interact, attend a variety of sessions, and share information. My favorite part is the cross-pollination and idea swapping that occurs. It’s a vibrant event where neighbors learn from each other, then take these ideas and apply them to their individual neighborhoods.
Eugene Weeks talked about getting feet on the street, meeting neighbors, and implementing a yard of the month that motivated his neighbors to spruce up their yards. He walked attendees through some “low tech” ways that allows his community to thrive. they use yard signs to attrach people to their meetings. Block captains help distribute flyers. Weeks said that one way to motivate is to have people spread the word. Folks tell people: “you missed a good meeting” or “aren’t you concerned about crime?” (more…)
