High tech / low tech ways to help your neighborhood flourish

Saturday, September 18th, 2010

I had the privilege to present along side Eugene Weeks and Mark Turner, two outstanding community leaders, at today’s Raleigh Neighborhood Exchange. The neighborhood exchange was held on Saturday, September 18, 2010 at the McKimmon Conference Center and is a chance for citizens across Raleigh to interact, attend a variety of sessions, and share information. My favorite part is the cross-pollination and idea swapping that occurs. It’s a vibrant event where neighbors learn from each other, then take these ideas and apply them to their individual neighborhoods.

Eugene Weeks talked about getting feet on the street, meeting neighbors, and implementing a yard of the month that motivated his neighbors to spruce up their yards. He walked attendees through some “low tech” ways that allows his community to thrive. they use yard signs to attrach people to their meetings. Block captains help distribute flyers. Weeks said that one way to motivate is to have people spread the word. Folks tell people: “you missed a good meeting” or “aren’t you concerned about crime?” (more…)

9-1-1 vs The Non-Emergency Number

Thursday, August 26th, 2010

On our neighborhood email list, we’ve had lots of discussion about quality of life issues such as noise complaints, parties, fireworks, parking violations etc. Needless to say, people are confused on when to dial 9-1-1 versus the non-emergency number (919) 831-6311. The Pleasant Ridge & Ramsgate Community Watch program has helped educate neighbors about 9-1-1 and sponsored tours of the 9-1-1 center in the past.

I decided to ask Walt Fuller, Deputy Director of Operations for Raleigh-Wake County Emergency Communications Center to help clarify some of the confusion. Our Q&A is below:

1) What happens when a call comes in to the Raleigh-Wake County Emergency Communications Center for a Raleigh Police officer? (more…)

Can we get Kaboom! to help fund our park?

Monday, May 24th, 2010

At next weeks budget hearing (June 1st, 7:00 PM, City Council chambers), I’ll be asking the City of Raleigh set aside parks and recreation money to help fund the master plan for the future park at Sierra Drive and Lineberry Drive. This is part of a larger list of budget items that we’ve gathered as part of the South West Citizens Advisory Council (SWCAC).

The budget will be tight, but it’s important that we keep asking. As I was reviewing the weekly E-newsletter from the city, I saw an article about the Kaboom! organization helping to fund playground equipment replacement at Southgate Park (see press release below). I then thought to myself, could the Lineberry Alliance apply for a grant for our future park? (more…)

Tonight, I got a chance to present on community outreach to a motivated group of future community leaders at a session of the Citizens Leadership Academy (CLA), a free series of classes offered by the City of Raleigh Community Services Department.  I presented with Arlene Sanders from the Historic Oakwood neighborhood and provided insight from the past 8 years that I’ve been involved with my community.

Guest Blog: Help improve the safety on Sierra Dirve

I have been working with my Civics and Economics class to get a three-way stop at the intersection of Sierra and Lawrence. This is a dangerous intersection, as some of you may know. There is a hill with blind spots in both directions and parked cars add to the poor visibility at the intersection. We are working on getting a petition signed to install a 3-way stop sign. If you are interested in signing the petition, please e-mail me directly.
