Streamlined Recycling for 2009: Saves Money and Time

Wednesday, December 31st, 2008

A New Year’s treat from the City of Raleigh. Starting in 2009, the city is moving to single-stream collection for recycling. An article in the News & Observer: Raleigh to use new recycling trucks
cautions that customers shouldn’t be surprised to see a “traditional garbage truck picking up their recycling.” The new single stream also set’s us up for a larger recycle bin. I’m a huge fan of having a recycle bin as large as our trash bins.

Additional information from the City of Raleigh E-Newsletter:

RALEIGH TO GO TO SINGLE-STREAM RECYCLING JAN. 1

The City of Raleigh will transition to single-stream recycling collection on January 1. The change will mean that collection crews will no longer need to sort recyclable materials between paper products and containers. All recycling bins will simply be emptied into the truck. The transition will mean that crews will be able to cover more ground during their shifts.

“A lot of people like to help the crews and sort the materials themselves,” said City of Raleigh Waste Reduction Specialist Linda Leighton. “We have been asking people to put containers at the bottom of the bins and paper on top to make things easier. They won’t need to worry about it come January 1. The crews will simply dump everything into the truck.”

The change will come because of updates and improvements made by the City’s recycling contractor, Sonoco Recycling Inc. The company has invested more than $3.5 million and expanded its facility at 111 S. Rogers Lane by more than 22,000 square feet. As a result, the company changed from a manual system to a fully automated facility that can process twice as much material.

The transition will also reduce the fixed price the City receives from $26 per ton to $16 per ton. While the City will receive less revenue, the change should save the City money in both time and equipment. The split-body trucks used for dual-stream recycling cost $60,000 more than traditional rear-loading trucks. In fiscal year 2008-09 the new system will save $180,000 as three new trucks were previously scheduled for purchase.

“Residents should not be surprised to see what looks like a traditional garbage truck picking up their recycling and throwing it in the back of the truck – it is not destined for the landfill,” Mrs. Leighton added. “It is still going to the recycling facility, only now technology has stepped in to do what was previously done by the hands of our crews.”

Every recycling truck will be replaced with a rear loading truck as its life cycle expires. In a few years, the City will be able to switch over to carts for recycling collection instead of small recycling bins.

From the City of Raleigh E-Newsletter:

Solid Waste Services Pocket Guide To Be Mailed This Week

Beginning this week, the City of Raleigh Solid Waste Services Department will mail all single-family households a small and comprehensive pocket-guide.

The comprehensive guide folds into a credit card-sized package and contains all of the collection options Solid Waste Services provides as well as the recycling opportunities available throughout Wake County. The guide is in full color and even offers photos and a map of drop-off locations, multi-material and household hazardous facilities, and collection schedules.

When folded, the handy guide can be tucked away into a wallet or glove box. It even includes a magnet on the back so it can be placed on a refrigerator.

Household Hazardous Waste pilot for Oct & Nov 2008

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008

For the months of October and November, Wake County is expanding itsHHW flyer Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) program to include collection every Saturday at both landfill locations (normally on the 1st Saturday of the month at the North Wake facility and the 3rd Saturday of the month at the South Wake facility). This is a pilot project to determine if there is enough demand for this service to warrant expanding the program outside of its current set-up.

Residents can make use of one of these convenience dates to properly dispose or recycle many of the potentially dangerous items piling up in the house or garage. A list of items accepted can be viewed on Wake County’s web page www.wakegov.com/recycling/residents/houshazwaste.

Wake County soon plans to put a survey on the same web page asking for resident feedback on having the HHW facilities open every Saturday so check back regularly if you’d like to give them your thoughts. For more information about Wake County Solid Waste Management, call 919-856-7400.

Over 100 Phone Books Recycled

Thursday, May 8th, 2008

Back at the beginning of April we wrote about recycling phone books in the post: Neighbors Team Up On Phone Books

Thanks to Brena & Gene from Pleasant Ridge & Ramsgate, Paul from Trailwood Springs, and Lisa from Trailwood Valley, our neighborhoods collected over 100 phones and brought them to the one of our local recycling centers. We did this primarily because the city does not collect phone books as part of their curb side recycling program and to save individuals from making trips to the recycle center.

We hope that next year we can have a collection spot in each neighborhood and triple the number of phone books recycled. Check out the stack of phone books that Paul collected:

Recycle Those Phone books

Wednesday, February 6th, 2008

Message from Raleigh Recycling:

Wake County has set up its annual recycling program to coincide with the delivery of the new phone books. Please DO NOT put your old (or new!) phone books in your curbside recycling bin! The paper the phone books are made of is of such poor quality that it degrades the value of the paper products that is collected in the curbside, multi-family and drop-off programs. Phone book paper can be recycled – but not back into regular paper. Instead it is made into insulation material or sometimes animal bedding products.

Wake County Telephone Book Recycling Program
Residents and businesses can recycle unwanted telephone books February 4, 2008, until May 9, 2008, during Wake County’s Annual Telephone Book Recycling Program. The program coincides with the delivery of new telephone books from several different companies. For all locations, see their web page www.wakegov.com/recycling/residents/recycle/telephonebook.htm.
