I previously posted about the Tryon Road, Part C project being included in the City of Raleigh’s 10-year Capital Improvement Plan (CIP). But there were lots of questions about what that really means. Is there really money set aside or is it just a placeholder? I did some research and got input from all the players involved in the final phase of the Tryon Road project in South West Raleigh: City of Raleigh, Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (CAMPO), and North Carolina Department of Transportation’s (NCDOT).

On our neighborhood email list, we’ve had lots of discussion about quality of life issues such as noise complaints, parties, fireworks, parking violations etc. Needless to say, people are confused on when to dial 9-1-1 versus the non-emergency number (919) 831-6311. The Pleasant Ridge & Ramsgate Community Watch program has helped educate neighbors about 9-1-1 and sponsored tours of the 9-1-1 center in the past.
I decided to ask Walt Fuller, Deputy Director of Operations for Raleigh-Wake County Emergency Communications Center to help clarify some of the confusion. Our Q&A is below:

I’m sure many people are interested in both the Lake Wheeler Road improvements and the Tryon Road, Part C project. The City of Raleigh recently announced the major road projects that are to be included in their 10-year Capital Improvement Plan (CIP). Both projects made the cut for phase one, which means that funds are being allocated for the projects.
What does that all mean? I’m not sure yet. But I’ve got some research to do, as I’m concerned about the coordination with Tryon Road Part C and the Tryon Road bridge. For now, check out the details for these two projects in our vicinity.

It seems to be dragging on doesn’t it? Getting Avent Ferry Road resurfaced. I jokingly say the road is better now then when it was covered with potholes. And it’s slowing cars down too. But there is hope. And I’m pretty sure, when the asphalt has cooled and the paint has dried, we’ll have a better road. In fact, parts of Avent Ferry are getting a “road diet” as the engineers like to say. The cyclists are popping wheelies!

Carolina Pines Community Center Proposed Renovation Design

About 15 citizens met on August 10, 2010 at Carolina Pines Community Center to see the unveiling of the proposed renovations and additions to the community center facilities to start construction in early 2011. Lynn Sullivan, Project Manager from Raleigh Parks & Rec, introduced the project team from New City Design and provided a brief overview of the project and budget.

The following information provided by the City of Raleigh
Text change TC-3-10 has been approved. TC-3-10 rewrites City Code Section 10-2091, Pedestrian Access. The regulations update the City’s Zoning Code to comply with the recently adopted NC State Building Code legislation on ADA accessibility; and incorporates several recommended policies found in the Land Use, Environmental and Transportation Elements of the 2030 Comprehensive Plan.

After much discussion, pilot groups, testing, and patience, the new website for the City of Raleigh that I’ve heard so much about is finally becoming a reality in August. One of the highlights includes the Raleigh Beehive, a self-help web portal, that sounds like it will be interesting and useful to citizens. The one thing I’ll be on the lookout for is more support for the Citizen Advisory Councils (CACs). We are in desperate needs of better communication tools and online community building. On Aug. 1, the City of Raleigh’s web portal will change – completely! The site has been re-created to be of greater value to residents and to make it a more enjoyable and productive place to visit. Anyone who has been down Avent Ferry Road during the past two weeks might have noticed the road is in the process of being resurfaced; to the price tag of $4 million dollars. I’m super stoked about the project, as I avoided the pot-hole laden, right-hand, North bound lane like the plague before the project started. I imagine that frequent users of Avent Ferry welcome the resurfacing project as well.
You might remember in an earlier interview with Eric Lamb, Transportation Services Division, City of Raleigh Public Works Department, he told us that Avent Ferry Road was scheduled for resurfacing this summer. I would argue that NCDOT, the authority responsible for Avent Ferry Road maintenance, is missing a huge opportunity to improve the road and make it a complete street, satisfying much needed pedestrian amenities and making it safer for pedestrians crossing a five-lane road. Over the past few weekends, when the weather was a little less hot and humid, I started to explore the Walnut Creek Greenway which runs East-West between I-40 and Tryon Road. There is a new trailhead that now connects to Lake Wheeler Road across from the Farmer’s Market. I was on the trail this past weekend before it got too terribly hot. The Walnut Creek Greenway is a hidden gem for those that haven’t found it yet.
