Lake Wheeler Veterinary Hospital is hosting a family day/client appreciation day on December 20, 2010 from 9am – 5pm. Bring the pets and your family. There will be a local pet transport company represented, teamworks dog training, and a number of other fun activities. The fire department and police department have been invited to attend.
Critter Coach will be at family day/client appreciation day from 2-5pm.
The District D Neighborhood Alliance (DDNA), a group of neighborhood leaders passionate about their neighborhoods and Raleigh, had their final meeting of the year on November 20, 2010 at the Renaissance Park clubhouse. The group meets on the third Saturday of each month and will not host a meeting in December. Today’s meeting was a time for the group to reflect on the past year, enjoy a potluck breakfast, and generate some ideas for future meeting topics.

Back in 2008, Raleigh City Council strengthened the PROP (Probationary Rental Occupancy Permit) by adding in a variety of criminal elements that would result in a strike against the property / landlord. Those elements included: prostitution, possession of stolen goods violations of certain state alcohol and liquor regulations, unlawful weapons, unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon, gaming violations; and, disorderly conduct.
In October, the City Council started exploring adding drug violations to the list of criminal elements of the PROP. This would further strengthen the PROP and help ensure that landlords are getting quality tenants on their property. “A few months ago, some 1920s-era storefronts and an old rental house across from Cup-a-Joe on Hillsborough Street were knocked down. In their place, a gigantic mound of dirt was left. It’s been the subject of speculation amongst passersby and coffee shop patrons, but I don’t think anything has been publicly stated outlining exactly what the miniature mountain is all about.

It’s gonna be big. In fact, the biggest event of it’s kind in Raleigh. You’ll be able to recycle almost anything–even electronics with a plug. Raleigh Recycling, the recycling division of the City of Raleigh Solid Waste Services Department, will hold its largest recycling event ever to celebrate America Recycles Day on Saturday, Nov. 13. Recycling, shredding and reuse services, exhibitors, a Kid Zone for children and a live band will be among the activities at the free event, which will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Shops of Seaboard, 802 Semart Drive. Raleigh, NC – The Pleasant Ridge & Ramsgate Community Watch, building a safe and informed family community, is hosting a pot luck dinner and their final meeting of the year on November 16, 2010. All Pleasant Ridge & Ramsgate Community Watch members are invited to attend. The pot luck will start at 6:30 pm at Lake Wheeler Pentecostal Church (back room) and the meeting starts at 7pm.
We’d like to highlight the community watch in action. Watchful neighbors helped stop an in progress robbery on October 26, 2010. An email was sent to our neighborhood wide Alliance list titled: Burglars Bagged and it promptly boasted, community watch works! It summarized that Raleigh Police Department (RPD) arrested at least two suspects coming out of the house at 2408 Sierra between 4:30 and 5:00 pm on that afternoon.

Over the past few months, the South West Citizens Advisory Council (SWCAC) had representatives from OBS Landscape Architects present at our meetings. They were there to gather input, feedback, and show us the ideas for streetscape projects on Fayetteville Street and Wilmington Street. We even got some of the business owners involved.

Picture this. It’s a rainy, dark evening and our family has driven two cars all the way from Lancaster, Pennsylvania to Raleigh, our new home. I advise our son in the front car to stay in the right lane as we drive south on Capital Boulevard into the city, since we don’t know the lay of the land. It isn’t long before we’re confused. With every mile, our lane disappears and we’re forced to the left. This is the strangest traffic pattern we’ve encountered in a long time, and we ask ourselves, This is where we’re going to be living now?
First of all, if you don’t read anything else on this post, read this: exercise your right to vote. Get out and vote if you haven’t already. You probably work hard for a living and may not have time to pay attention to all the drama that is our political scene. To be honest, I pay attention–most of the time. I have a family, a full time job, a full time volunteer effort, and I’m training for my first marathon. I’m busy. But I’m casting my vote on November 2. You should too–because there is a lot at stake.
Now to a rant that’s been bothering me. Maybe you feel the same way?
