Can we get Kaboom! to help fund our park?

At next weeks budget hearing (June 1st, 7:00 PM, City Council chambers), I’ll be asking the City of Raleigh set aside parks and recreation money to help fund the master plan for the future park at Sierra Drive and Lineberry Drive. This is part of a larger list of budget items that we’ve gathered as part of the South West Citizens Advisory Council (SWCAC).

The budget will be tight, but it’s important that we keep asking. As I was reviewing the weekly E-newsletter from the city, I saw an article about the Kaboom! organization helping to fund playground equipment replacement at Southgate Park (see press release below). I then thought to myself, could the Lineberry Alliance apply for a grant for our future park? (more…)

SWCAC May 2010: Budget, Community Gardens, and more

At last night’s South West Citizens Advisory Council (SWCAC), we had a great collaborative session on several different topics including building a CAC website, budget requests, and community gardens. I got a chance to catch  up with one of Raleigh’s At-large City Councilors, Russ Stepenson, between his day job, city councilor duties, and a recent Chamber of Commerce Intercity trip to Washington DC and Fairfax, Virginia. Russ is very knowledgeable about a variety of topics. Often on City Council, he’s asking lots of questions to make sure he understand the issues. As an At-Large Councilor, he represents citizens from all of Raleigh. It was great to get his thoughts on the Lightner Center, Raleigh’s New Development Code, water conservation, city council goals, and community involvement.

Changes Coming to SWCAC

The agenda for the SouthWest Citizens Advisory Council (SWCAC) was posted today (PDF). Current Chair, Mary Belle Pate, announced at last months’ meeting, that after 30 years at the helm, it was time to pass on the reigns. She appointed Mildred Flynn of the Caraleigh community to form a nominating committee to seek out a new Chair and Vice-chair. (more…)
