9-1-1 vs The Non-Emergency Number

On our neighborhood email list, we’ve had lots of discussion about quality of life issues such as noise complaints, parties, fireworks, parking violations etc. Needless to say, people are confused on when to dial 9-1-1 versus the non-emergency number (919) 831-6311. The Pleasant Ridge & Ramsgate Community Watch program has helped educate neighbors about 9-1-1 and sponsored tours of the 9-1-1 center in the past.

I decided to ask Walt Fuller, Deputy Director of Operations for Raleigh-Wake County Emergency Communications Center to help clarify some of the confusion. Our Q&A is below:

Do It Again at National Night Out 2010

Raleigh, NC – The Pleasant Ridge & Ramsgate Community Watch, building a safe and informed family community, participated in this year’s National Night Out, a unique crime/drug prevention event, on August 3, 2010.. NNO is designed to:

Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness;
Generate support for, and participation in, local anti-crime programs;
Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and
Send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

City Planning Hosting Another Workshop on Transitions

One of the big topics that came up during the review of Raleigh’s 2030 Comprehensive Plan was transitions–how one land use transitions to another type. An initial workshop was held in June, but this is an important topic. So big, it’s worthy of another session. See the information below on the next workshop and why you should participate.

Athens Drive High School Needs Your Help

The stadium facilities at Athens Drive High School have not been upgraded or improved since the school opened over 30 years ago. The parking lot remains unpaved–the restroom and concession areas are small and outdated. Handicap access to the stadium is in dire need of improvement. Neighborhood Exchange Set for September 18

NEIGHBORHOOD EXCHANGE OFFERING IDEAS FOR STRONGER NEIGHBORHOODS SEPT. 18

The City of Raleigh is registering residents for the Raleigh Neighborhood Exchange. The September 18 event will gather ideas and share information on how to make local neighborhoods better.

The annual exchange takes place from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the McKimmon Center, 1101 Gorman Street. The registration fee is $10, which includes a continental breakfast and lunch. Teenagers are admitted for free when accompanied by an adult.

Community Watch: 22 Residential Burglary Prevention Tips

Raleigh, NC – The Pleasant Ridge & Ramsgate Community Watch, building a safe and informed family community, is partnering with Raleigh Police Department (RPD) to bring you the following residential burglary prevention tips.

It’s unfortunate that we have to highlight crime in our neighborhood, but there have been several break-ins in the Lineberry area over the past few weeks. Trailwood Hills and Trailwood Springs have been hit pretty hard. Hot items include flat screen TV’s, jewelry, cash, laptops, and other items of convenience.

Be sure to review the following crime prevention tips to make your home safer. There are no guarantee’s, but you can make things more difficult for burglars. (more…)

Carolina Pines Community Center Proposed Renovation Design

About 15 citizens met on August 10, 2010 at Carolina Pines Community Center to see the unveiling of the proposed renovations and additions to the community center facilities to start construction in early 2011. Lynn Sullivan, Project Manager from Raleigh Parks & Rec, introduced the project team from New City Design and provided a brief overview of the project and budget.
