Learn about plans to extend the 540 turnpike further east to I-40 and US 64/264
The 540/Triangle Expressway turnpike will be open from RTP to the Holly Springs bypass by December 2012. While that project is currently under construction, the NC Turnpike Authority division of NCDOT is reviewing a future southeast extension of that turnpike to US 401 south, I-40 east, US 70 east bypass, and US 64/264 east bypass. If plans and funding come together, portions of the 540/TriExtension turnpike east of Holly Springs could be under construction within five years.
To learn more and offer comments, you can visit any of the following workshops this week: (more…)

Text Change TC-7-09, Front Yard Parking (FYP) for single family detached dwellings is on the Comprehensive Planning Committee agenda this week. The meeting is on Wednesday, September 15, 2010 at 1:00 pm in Room 201, City Council Chambers, at 222 West Hargett Street.
The latest issue being looked at is how homes fronting on thoroughfare roads might be impacted. Planning Director Mitch Silver brought up this topic at last month’s meeting. This will probably be the bulk of the talk at this meeting. Past meetings that I’ve attended have seen support from citizens around the city, with only a few people speaking in opposition to the text change. My opinion is that most citizens would support this text change to improve quality of life issues in their neighborhoods. (more…)

At tonight’s South West Citizens Advisory Council (SWCAC) meeting, one of the main topics is the rezoning case Z-21-10 [PDF]. The rezoning is on the corner of Lake Wheeler Road and Kirkland Drive, and based on last month’s presentation, a vote in support could take place during the meeting. The petitioners want to put an Ample Storage facility on the site. This could be the type of development that kick starts the right kind of growth that the Lake Wheeler corridor has been missing for the last few years. There are no guarantees about what development will go on a rezoned property.
Would you vote in favor of rezoning Z-21-10?
- no (50%, 2 Votes)
- yes (50%, 2 Votes)
Total Voters: 4

RALEIGH URBAN DESIGN CENTER
Outreach and Education Fall 2010
Take a mid-day break and stop in at the Raleigh Urban Design Center to learn about and discuss issues that affect our city today and as we plan for the future.
Architecture and Urban Design
Urban design theory deals primarily with the design and management of the public realm and the way public places are experienced and used by people. Architecture is a key component of that experience. This Raleigh Urban Design Center Forum will highlight architecture and how it contributes to quality urban design, the public realm, and a sustainable Raleigh. (more…)

One of the big topics that came up during the review of Raleigh’s 2030 Comprehensive Plan was transitions–how one land use transitions to another type. An initial workshop was held in June, but this is an important topic. So big, it’s worthy of another session. See the information below on the next workshop and why you should participate.

Help define how Raleigh transitions land uses
Raleigh’s New Development Code

The following post was submitted by the Jaguar Club, the Athens Drive athletic boosters.

The stadium facilities at Athens Drive High School have not been upgraded or improved since the school opened over 30 years ago. The parking lot remains unpaved–the restroom and concession areas are small and outdated. Handicap access to the stadium is in dire need of improvement. Pedestrian access, seating, press box and lighting likewise need improvement. The most serious need at the stadium is (more…)

We talked last week about Sharrows Coming to Raleigh. This week, we’ve discovered additional information and a few resources that are helping to education both cyclists and motorist about sharrows. In fact, the paint is drying as you read this, in some area’s of the Triangle.
An article posted on the Go Traingle Wordpess blog, Ride this way! Sharrows popping up in Raleigh and Cary! tells us about the criteria on where sharrows can be placed: (more…)
