Lake Wheeler Road Improvements on CAMPO’s List

Friday, December 3rd, 2010

$2.1 million being pumped into the Lake Wheeler Road corridor? Am I reading this right?

This news is back from October 19, but relevant to our area. Neighbors have been asking for pedestrian improvements to the Lake Wheeler Road corridor for years, but we keep hitting road blocks. Some believe that the lack of a master plan for the road is one problem. Long-term plans have included a 5-lane option, a 4-lane with a median option, and even a 3-lane option for road expansion.

The requests and dialog that I’ve seen go to City Council haven’t focused on expanding the road so that our neighbors to the South can get to downtown and I-40 faster–we’ve been asking for sidewalks and crosswalks. Have you tried to walk to Carolina Pines Park from our neighborhoods? Good luck crossing Lake Wheeler Road.

The NeighborGoods experiment: Does sharing locally work?

Wednesday, December 1st, 2010

Back in July, I wrote a post about Sharing with your neighbors that focused on the site NeighborGoods.net. The service connects people who need to borrow and rent “neighborly” items with others in the community that have the items. Rakes, shovels, lawn mowers, bikes, vacuum cleaners, etc.

In October, I interviewed the founder and CEO of NeighborGoods.net, Micki Krimmel, for opensource.com. Since then, I’ve been thinking about firing up the service for my neighborhood here in Raleigh.

To kick off the month of December, I decided to (more…)

The District D Neighborhood Alliance (DDNA), a group of neighborhood leaders passionate about their neighborhoods and Raleigh, had their final meeting of the year on November 20, 2010 at the Renaissance Park clubhouse. The group meets on the third Saturday of each month and will not host a meeting in December. Today’s meeting was a time for the group to reflect on the past year, enjoy a potluck breakfast, and generate some ideas for future meeting topics.

Drug Violations Considered for PROP Amendment

Friday, November 19th, 2010

Back in 2008, Raleigh City Council strengthened the PROP (Probationary Rental Occupancy Permit) by adding in a variety of criminal elements that would result in a strike against the property / landlord. Those elements included: prostitution, possession of stolen goods violations of certain state alcohol and liquor regulations, unlawful weapons, unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon, gaming violations; and, disorderly conduct.

In October, the City Council started exploring adding drug violations to the list of criminal elements of the PROP. This would further strengthen the PROP and help ensure that landlords are getting quality tenants on their property. I am uncertain at this time if the drug violations would require a conviction before (more…)

Community Watch Nabs Burglars

Tuesday, November 9th, 2010

Raleigh, NC – The Pleasant Ridge & Ramsgate Community Watch, building a safe and informed family community, is hosting a pot luck dinner and their final meeting of the year on November 16, 2010. All Pleasant Ridge & Ramsgate Community Watch members are invited to attend. The pot luck will start at 6:30 pm at Lake Wheeler Pentecostal Church (back room) and the meeting starts at 7pm.

We’d like to highlight the community watch in action. Watchful neighbors helped stop an in progress robbery on October 26, 2010. An email was sent to our neighborhood wide Alliance list titled: Burglars Bagged and it promptly boasted, community watch works! It summarized that Raleigh Police Department (RPD) arrested at least two suspects coming out of the house at 2408 Sierra between 4:30 and 5:00 pm on that afternoon.

Raleigh Honors Landlord, Other Citizens

Thursday, October 21st, 2010

I had the pleasure of attending and presenting at the Neighborhood Recognition Awards held at the McKimmon Center last night (October 20, 2010). The awards recipients are selected by each of Raleigh’s Citizens Advisory Councils (CAC). The officers of the 18 Citizens Advisory Councils make up Raleigh Citizens Advisory Council (RCAC).

Each CAC nominates individuals, groups, nonprofits, grassroots organizations, and businesses for the Neighborhood Recognition Awards. Last night was a chance to recognize those individuals, groups, and businesses.

The SouthWest CAC recognized Bill Dumont, a landlord working closely with the Caraleigh community. Mildred Flynn helped me present the award to Bill. He talked about (more…)

Ample Storage Rezoning Goes to Council and Planning Commission

Thursday, October 14th, 2010

You may have heard that Ample Storage is looking to build a new facility on Lake Wheeler Road. At the September 2010 meeting of the SouthWest Citizen Advisory Council (SWCAC) the group supported the rezoning case: “The SWCAC accepted and approved the conditional uses for zoning case Z-21-10 with the expectation that EIFS be removed as a building material on the application. A motion was made, seconded, and the motion passed 8-0 in support of the rezoning.”

Ample Storage

The next step in that process is occurring at a joint meeting of Raleigh City Council and the Planning Commission on Tuesday, October 19, 2010 at 6:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers. This will be a public hearing, so all citizens are invited to attend and chime in on this, and other rezoning cases. Details below. (more…)
