The following message was sent to the Lineberry Alliance list on 12.20.10. I must say thanks who have helped make the Lineberry Alliance what it is today and also to those that will take it to the next level.
Hi neighbors,
I wanted to send this note to you before the holidays got into full swing. In 2011, I plan on scaling back my participation in the Lineberry Alliance. I’m very proud of the work we’ve done so far. We’ve figured out that if our neighborhoods can work together and share successes & challenges, that we can make our part of the world a better place.
I have a project that looks really fun and is an opportunity for me help make the larger area we live in more recognized. (more…)

’tis the season….Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Christmas, New Years, birthdays, traveling, visitors, break-ins…
Yep, I said it. The B word. BREAK-INS.
Unfortunately this is the time of year that as many of us prepare for Christmas, traveling, celebrating with family and friends, someone else is preparing to make our holiday one we won’t forget.

The SouthWest Citizens Advisory Council (SWCAC) starting looking forward to 2011, eyeing goals for the new year, at their monthly meeting on Monday, December 13, 2010. This month, we hosted our friends from the West CAC to discuss items of interest to both groups. The agenda included the usual parks report and Raleigh Police Department (RPD) call log with joint CAC items for boundary discussions and rezoning case Z-1-11.
Toward the end of the meeting, SWCAC attendees discussed goals for 2011 that included an awareness campaign to target neighborhoods currently not active in the CAC and getting more businesses involved with the CAC. More details on this a little later. About 25 residents from both the West CAC and SWCAC gathered to discuss the topics. (more…)

Have you seen the new bus stop on Lineberry Drive? We got some upgrades at the bus stop near Lineberry Drive and Trailwood Drive on CAT route 11 (Avent Ferry route).

I was curious about what was going on and what sparked the enhancement from a single bench to a full on shelter and waiting pad. I was able to get up with Aaron Hair, Planner I with the City of Raleigh to get the details. We put Aaron on the hot seat for a quick interview on these upgrades and other Capital Area Transit (CAT) services:

$2.1 million being pumped into the Lake Wheeler Road corridor? Am I reading this right?
This news is back from October 19, but relevant to our area. Neighbors have been asking for pedestrian improvements to the Lake Wheeler Road corridor for years, but we keep hitting road blocks. Some believe that the lack of a master plan for the road is one problem. Long-term plans have included a 5-lane option, a 4-lane with a median option, and even a 3-lane option for road expansion.
The requests and dialog that I’ve seen go to City Council haven’t focused on expanding the road so that our neighbors to the South can get to downtown and I-40 faster–we’ve been asking for sidewalks and crosswalks. Have you tried to walk to Carolina Pines Park from our neighborhoods? Good luck crossing Lake Wheeler Road.

Back in July, I wrote a post about Sharing with your neighbors that focused on the site NeighborGoods.net. The service connects people who need to borrow and rent “neighborly” items with others in the community that have the items. Rakes, shovels, lawn mowers, bikes, vacuum cleaners, etc.
In October, I interviewed the founder and CEO of NeighborGoods.net, Micki Krimmel, for opensource.com. Since then, I’ve been thinking about firing up the service for my neighborhood here in Raleigh.

Guest post from Dr. Sandra M. Grant, DVM, Lake Wheeler Veterinary Hospital
Lake Wheeler Veterinary Hospital is hosting a family day/client appreciation day on December 20, 2010 from 9am – 5pm. Bring the pets and your family. There will be a local pet transport company represented, teamworks dog training, and a number of other fun activities. The fire department and police department have been invited to attend.
Critter Coach will be at family day/client appreciation day from 2-5pm.

Back in 2008, Raleigh City Council strengthened the PROP (Probationary Rental Occupancy Permit) by adding in a variety of criminal elements that would result in a strike against the property / landlord. Those elements included: prostitution, possession of stolen goods violations of certain state alcohol and liquor regulations, unlawful weapons, unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon, gaming violations; and, disorderly conduct.
In October, the City Council started exploring adding drug violations to the list of criminal elements of the PROP. This would further strengthen the PROP and help ensure that landlords are getting quality tenants on their property. Found this great post over on Goodnight Raleigh! I think it’s great and wouldn’t mind if something like this had a permanent home in our city.
“A few months ago, some 1920s-era storefronts and an old rental house across from Cup-a-Joe on Hillsborough Street were knocked down. In their place, a gigantic mound of dirt was left. It’s been the subject of speculation amongst passersby and coffee shop patrons, but I don’t think anything has been publicly stated outlining exactly what the miniature mountain is all about.

It’s gonna be big. In fact, the biggest event of it’s kind in Raleigh. You’ll be able to recycle almost anything–even electronics with a plug. If you’ve been saving some of those recyclable items instead of adding them to the landfill, then Saturday, November 13, is the day you’ve been waiting for. Shred some old documents. Donate household items in good condition. There will be stuff for the kids to do and even a live band!

RALEIGH TO CELEBRATE AMERICA RECYCLES DAY IN BIG WAY
Raleigh Recycling, the recycling division of the City of Raleigh Solid Waste Services Department, will hold its largest recycling event ever to celebrate America Recycles Day on Saturday, Nov. 13. Recycling, shredding and reuse services, exhibitors, a Kid Zone for children and a live band will be among the activities at the free event, which will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Shops of Seaboard, 802 Semart Drive.
