Raleigh, NC – The Pleasant Ridge & Ramsgate Community Watch, building a safe and informed family community, is hosting a pot luck dinner and their final meeting of the year on November 16, 2010. All Pleasant Ridge & Ramsgate Community Watch members are invited to attend. The pot luck will start at 6:30 pm at Lake Wheeler Pentecostal Church (back room) and the meeting starts at 7pm.
We’d like to highlight the community watch in action. Watchful neighbors helped stop an in progress robbery on October 26, 2010. An email was sent to our neighborhood wide Alliance list titled: Burglars Bagged and it promptly boasted, community watch works! It summarized that Raleigh Police Department (RPD) arrested at least two suspects coming out of the house at 2408 Sierra between 4:30 and 5:00 pm on that afternoon.

Bad guys bagged by RPD
A neighbor was grilling outside when they noticed a young man in a hard hat in a neighbor’s backyard. They thought he might be working on the house or something, but then (more…)

Over the past few months, the South West Citizens Advisory Council (SWCAC) had representatives from OBS Landscape Architects present at our meetings. They were there to gather input, feedback, and show us the ideas for streetscape projects on Fayetteville Street and Wilmington Street. We even got some of the business owners involved.
The streetscape concepts were (more…)

Picture this. It’s a rainy, dark evening and our family has driven two cars all the way from Lancaster, Pennsylvania to Raleigh, our new home. I advise our son in the front car to stay in the right lane as we drive south on Capital Boulevard into the city, since we don’t know the lay of the land. It isn’t long before we’re confused. With every mile, our lane disappears and we’re forced to the left. This is the strangest traffic pattern we’ve encountered in a long time, and we ask ourselves, This is where we’re going to be living now?

First of all, if you don’t read anything else on this post, read this: exercise your right to vote. Get out and vote if you haven’t already. You probably work hard for a living and may not have time to pay attention to all the drama that is our political scene. To be honest, I pay attention–most of the time. I have a family, a full time job, a full time volunteer effort, and I’m training for my first marathon. I’m busy. But I’m casting my vote on November 2. You should too–because there is a lot at stake.
Now to a rant that’s been bothering me. Maybe you feel the same way?
Political signs. They are everywhere and they are annoying.
This isn’t a rant about all the (more…)

See below for an opportunity to provide NCDOT feedback on why the new prioritization process isn’t working for the Tryon Road expansion and bridge replacement projects. Please participate if you can and sign our petition if you haven’t already.
NCDOT SEEKS PUBLIC INPUT ON PRIORITIZING PROCESS NOV. 8
The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) is conducting a series of listening session to develop its next version of strategic prioritization, which is being referred to as Prioritization 2.0.
The NCDOT staff is hosting these listening sessions to solicit feedback and input from its planning partners, stakeholders and the public on how to improve the current prioritization process. This feedback is to be used to guide the development of Prioritization 2.0. (more…)

I had the pleasure of attending and presenting at the Neighborhood Recognition Awards held at the McKimmon Center last night (October 20, 2010). The awards recipients are selected by each of Raleigh’s Citizens Advisory Councils (CAC). The officers of the 18 Citizens Advisory Councils make up Raleigh Citizens Advisory Council (RCAC).
Each CAC nominates individuals, groups, nonprofits, grassroots organizations, and businesses for the Neighborhood Recognition Awards. Last night was a chance to recognize those individuals, groups, and businesses.
The SouthWest CAC recognized Bill Dumont, a landlord working closely with the Caraleigh community. Mildred Flynn helped me present the award to Bill. He talked about (more…)

We previously posted about potential improvements to Athens Drive stadium and the Jaguar booster club gathering support from the public for those improvements to get on the right path. It’s no coincidence that a proposed multi-purpose facility at Lake Johnson Park is slotted for 2012 and the (some say overdue) need for stadium improvements are being brought to the forefront. The addition to Lake Johnson Park and the proposed stadium improvements seem like a win-win to me. In order for all these changes to happen, the park master plan needs to be updated.
I was excited to see the news below about the City of Raleigh approving the Lake Johnson contract to Szostak Design. You may recognize Szostak Design because of the proposed (more…)
